Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby

Sat., May 17, 12:30pm. Free. Trenton Ave. and Norris St. 215.427.0350. www.kinetickensington.org

The original Kensington in London is so posh the pigeons carry Gucci handbags (knockoffs mostly, but still). Philly’s Kensington is different. The folks are friendlier, the vibe less uptight, and the year’s social highlight is a mentalist homemade art project-cum-soapbox kart race rather than Lord and Lady Hellastuckupsnobbington’s coming out ball for their four horse-faced daughters Hortense, Hildebrand, Hilary and Hitlerena. The KKSD is working-class art meets grassroots sports—a prelude to West Philly’s annual Dumpster Derby (won last year, IMVHO, by the holy-mother-of-Godfuckster who stuck a huge burning U.S. flag on the back of his buggy) and the corporate whorefest that will be the Red Bull Soapbox Race taking place in Philly in December. Like arty-farty kamikazes crashing into the wreck-pitted deck of the aircraft carrier of corporate homogenization, East Kenizens will compete to see who can move the most outrageous, spirited or beautiful artistic statement using only the power of the human body, multiplied many times by the atomic cosmic power station that is the human imagination. “Think of a giant pink poodle hurtling through space, mud, sand and water,” say the organizers, helpfully. (Steven Wells)
